PE and Sport Premium

Vision

At Shiremoor Primary School, our vision for Physical Education is to inspire every child to embrace a healthy, active lifestyle while fostering a love for movement and physical activity. We aim to create an environment where all children feel motivated and confident to participate in PE, whether it’s for fun, fitness, or through friendly competition.

Our goal is to:

  1. Promote Healthy, Active Lifestyles: We are committed to encouraging all children to understand the importance of physical health and well-being, providing them with the skills and knowledge to make healthy choices both inside and outside the classroom.
  2. Foster Participation: We believe that every child, regardless of their ability, should have the opportunity to actively participate in PE lessons and extracurricular activities. By offering a diverse range of activities and supporting each individual, we aim to ensure that participation is high and that every child has a chance to develop their physical skills.
  3. Encourage Competition in a Positive Way: Through engaging and inclusive competitions, we strive to help children learn the values of teamwork, resilience, and sportsmanship. Our PE program promotes friendly competition, where success is measured not just by winning, but by personal growth, effort, and mutual respect.
  4. Increase Participation Rates: We aim to increase both in-school and inter-school participation rates, ensuring that children are not only enjoying physical activity but also engaging with opportunities to compete and represent the school in various sports.

Through these initiatives, we envision Shiremoor Primary School as a place where physical activity is a valued and integral part of each child's daily life, helping them grow into healthy, active, and confident individuals both inside and outside the classroom. The PE and Sport Premium funding has enabled us to enhance our offer and ensure that children benefit from an outstanding PE curriculum.

What is PE and Sport Premium

The PE and Sport Premium is a government funding initiative designed to enhance the quality of physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools across England. Its primary purpose is to ensure all pupils develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence to lead active, healthy lifestyles. Schools should use the funding to make sustainable improvements in PE and sport provision, such as increasing participation in physical activity, improving staff training, providing new equipment, and offering a broader range of extracurricular opportunities. The funding helps schools achieve long-term benefits for students, encouraging a lifelong love of sport and physical activity. (Department for Education, 2020). The funding must be spent in line with the Department for Education’s (DfE) guidelines and cannot be used for core curriculum costs or general school expenses. Schools are required to publish details of their PE and Sport Premium spending by 31st July each year, outlining how the funds have been used and the impact on pupils’ physical activity levels (DfE, 2023).

At Shiremoor Primary School, we are dedicated to delivering a broad and engaging PE curriculum that provides every child with the opportunity to develop fundamental movement skills, confidence, and a love for sport. Through a carefully planned curriculum, pupils experience a wide range of sports and physical activities that not only build their agility, balance, and coordination but also encourage teamwork, resilience, and a positive attitude towards a healthy lifestyle. From traditional team games such as football, netball, and rugby to individual sports like gymnastics and athletics, our pupils are introduced to a varied and inclusive programme that caters to all abilities and interests. We ensure that our children are equipped with the key physical competencies they need, while also fostering enjoyment and enthusiasm for lifelong participation in physical activity.

Competitive sport plays a key role in our provision, offering pupils the chance to challenge themselves in a competitive environment while representing the school with pride. We take part in a range of competitions and festivals organised by the local authority, allowing children to experience inter-school sport and test their skills against others. Additionally, we work with high-profile organisations such as Newcastle Falcons and Chance to Shine, providing pupils with exciting opportunities to engage in professional-standard competitions and coaching. To further promote physical activity, we offer a wide range of extra-curricular clubs, giving children the chance to participate in sports beyond the curriculum. These clubs, run by school staff and specialist coaches, include activities such as judo and cricket, ensuring children access high-quality coaching in sports they may not have experienced otherwise. By offering these additional opportunities, we aim to inspire all pupils to be active, build their confidence in sport, and develop skills that will benefit them for life.

For the academic year 2024 - 25, Shiremoor Primary School will receive £18,960. We receive this funding in two instalments.

In our school

At Shiremoor Primary we provide a high-quality physical education programme to develop the competence to excel in gymnastics, dance, games, athletics and swimming. Activities are mapped out for year group to ensure a breadth of opportunity is available to each child. In Key Stage 1, lessons focus on firstly developing fundamental movement skills; ensuring children are increasingly confident and competent to extend their agility, balance and coordination. We also actively promote competitive and co-operative physical activities.

Lessons are primarily centred on basic skills and fundamental movement skills such as agility, balance and coordination. As each child progresses through school, they are encouraged to develop these skills and use them in different ways.

We are proud of our extensive extra-curricular activities programme. We ensure all children are offered the opportunity to attend extra-curricular sporting activities and increase their levels of physical activity, and through data collection we are able to track and target individual children to ensure high levels of participation in physical activity. We also invite a range of specialist sport coaches to deliver activities such as  judo to ensure that children access a range of additional opportunities which they may not experience otherwise.

How we can measure the impact of PE and Sport Premium Funding?

At Shiremoor Primary School, we are committed to ensuring that the PE and Sport Premium funding is used effectively to make sustainable improvements to our PE provision and increase participation in physical activity. To measure the impact of this funding, we track progress against five key indicators set by the Department for Education, ensuring that our investment leads to long-term benefits for all pupils.

How We Measure Impact:

We assess the success of our PE and Sport Premium funding by monitoring pupils' engagement, progress, and confidence in PE and school sport. This includes evaluating participation levels in extra-curricular clubs, monitoring competition entries and achievements, assessing staff confidence and expertise following professional development, and gathering feedback from pupils, parents, and teachers. Our aim is to ensure that all pupils leave Shiremoor Primary School with the knowledge, skills, and enthusiasm to lead active, healthy lives.

The Five Key Indicators for Improvement:

  1. Increased Engagement in Regular Physical Activity – Encouraging all pupils to participate in at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day, in line with government recommendations.
  2. Raising the Profile of PE and Sport Across the School – Embedding a positive culture of sport and physical activity, ensuring it is valued by pupils, staff, and the wider school community.
  3. Increased Confidence, Knowledge, and Skills of Staff – Providing high-quality CPD (Continuing Professional Development) for teachers and staff to enhance their ability to deliver engaging and effective PE lessons.
  4. Broader Experience of a Range of Sports and Activities – Offering pupils the opportunity to participate in a variety of sports and activities, including both traditional and alternative sports, to ensure all children find something they enjoy.
  5. Increased Participation in Competitive Sport – Giving pupils more opportunities to take part in local authority competitions, school tournaments, and external events such as those offered by Newcastle Falcons and Chance to Shine.

By focusing on these key areas, we ensure that our PE and Sport Premium funding leaves a lasting impact, helping all children develop a love for physical activity that will benefit them throughout their lives.
