In Shiremoor Primary School we follow the statutory guidance from the National Primary Curriculum for Mathematics. We are working with the local authority guidance, using the North Tyneside progression maps, to support the planning and delivery of the subject in each year group. In addition to this, teachers have further support from the Focus Education Scheme of Work for Maths to help inform planning and resourcing.
The curriculum for Years 1, 3, 4 and 5 is available here.
Children in Years 2 and 6 also sit the National Curriculum SAT Tests towards the end of the academic year. A copy of the curriculum for these year groups is available here along with links to sample test papers and guidance on how each SAT test is administered.
Children are constantly assessed every lesson through the marking of work, children’s own self-assessment and through peer assessment. From Year 1 onwards, Children receive a personalised challenge question which either consolidates a child’s learning or extends their learning through reasoning and problem solving. Written work is then assessed formatively using Target Tracker. Target Tracker contains the curriculum statements which teachers then ‘tick off’ as each child achieves a target. This helps to build up a timeline for each child which shows their areas of strength as well as areas of the maths curriculum that children require further support with.
In addition to this, children complete termly PUMA Maths Assessments. These assessments cover a range of content from the curriculum and become more challenging as the year progresses. These assessments give each child a ‘Maths age’. This maths age is then used to chart a child’s progress in Maths as they move through school.
